The first time you take your boat out at night it can seem quite daunting but if you do everything right it’s a very enjoyable experience.
I really enjoy sailing on a moonlight sea in good weather conditions. If you are on an overnight passage, though you may be tired, there is something gratifying about watching dawn break from a boat at sea. The sky gradually lightens and the stars start to disappear, clouds turn from grey to pink then orange and finally the sun peaks over horizon.
If you are planning a trip that requires an overnight passage then a dry run and some careful preparation can make it much more relaxed and enjoyable.
Before setting off on a night sail, especially if the boat is new or has not been used for cruising, spend an evening onboard at your berth or mooring. Check all the lights, navigation lights, instrument backing lights etc. It’s important to keep your night vision. It can take 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust after exposure to a bright white light. To this end some lights in the boat like the galley and chart table and a torch should have red lenses or covers. Next pick a pleasant evening and go for a cruise in your local area to see how it all looks and feels at night both on the boat and the surrounding features and lights.
Tips for a successful overnight passage.
- Study your charts and program your waypoints in advance
- Choose a period of calm weather
- Choose a time around full moon, the moon gives a considerable amount of illumination
- Keep a good look out all around
- Keep your eyes adjusted to the dark
- Keep your VHF on channel 16

- Know your navigational mark and vessel light configurations
- Have warm clothes handy
- Have a hot drink and some snacks handy
- Rest or sleep when you are not on watch
- Set up and use your jacklines, harnesses and lifejackets especially if on deck alone
- Plan the arrival at your destination during daylight hours if possible
