Two Boats Aground At Mooloolaba

The beach just south of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast in South East Queensland seemed to have a magnetic attraction for boats on Thursday night.

MagusFirst the 65′ Tuna boat “Magnus” ended up stranded on the beach. It is understood the boat was heading north towards Mooloolaba when the incident happened. A report in the Sunshine Coast Daily says that the crew were asleep at the time!

Police and local residents residents assisted the now very awake crew ashore. The Magus was eventually refloated on Friday evening by a Brisbane based tug after unsuccessful attempt earlier in the day.

IslanderOn the same evening a 38′ former cray boat “Islander” ended up on the same beach just a few kilometres further south.

At this point no crew have been found or come forward. Police have traced the owner in Airlie Beach who believed the boat should have been safely tied up in its marina berth. An older wooden vessel, Islander did not fare as well as the Magus in the pounding waves. By Saturday Islander was reduced to piles of debris littering a kilometer long stretch of beach.

DebrisIt is not clear who will be responsible for clearing up the wreckage.
